Schools shutting before the snow

Is it just me or didnt we used to go to school in shorts with snow knee deep? I now live in Bournemouth (never ever gets snow) we wake up to 1cm this monring and theyve shut all the schools. FMOB. Teachers claiming on social media they cant go in because theyll get sued by parents. Well fuck me, even if the kids cant go to school these lazy bastards can still go to work. Does my fucking head in. Twats

Agreed that's what I meant. Sure it's not easy to forecast unpredictable weather but when the BBC hourly forecast says heavy snow for several hours but the map below says clear skies that is a tad confusing!!!

For a long time, forecasters have been making predictions with percentage chances of them coming true.
But they don't do all their own dissemination, and the varying forecasts from supposedly the same source suggests that the others with input have had the fuck confused out of them.

Good point Far Cough and that fact alone gives those of us living on this little island our innate ability to strike up a conversation about the weather with anyone at anytime anyplace anywhere.

Everyone accepts that. It's common knowledge. But is it acceptable for the same forecaster to show conflicting info about the day's forecast within the same page?

Plus, it's a bit of an unstable situation at the moment, with a long-term weather phenomenon, the Arctic Vortex, in partial breakdown.
That's the Magic Ring which prevents all the demons of frozen hell from invading Britain. Usually.

It's harder to forecast for a maritime climate like we have, as it can change in a heartbeat, it's more reliable when you have a continental climate

I spend a lot of time, especially between April and September, on weather websites as a result of my predilection for cricket.
I have found that they nearly all err towards worse case scenario when looking a few days in advance and in reality the weather is, more often than not, not as poor as predicted a few days earlier.
Only really reliable source of rain prediction is satellite radar apps and they are only decent for about 60 minutes in advance.

Our schools were rarely officially shut down, just in case a kid somehow found their way there and froze to death.
Usually they would just cancel the school buses, which effectively cancelled the school.
-30 with wind was usually the cut-off, -40 without.

TBH before I worked in a school I probably thought the same but since I have been working in an SEN School I can see the difficulties the Head is left with. For starters a lot of our children struggle with movement so yep it just takes one accident and you can have a court case on your hands. An awful lot of children are also brought in by various taxi and minibus firms so if they cry off that affects attendances.
Plus the biggest issue is that all the bloody forecasts are different. You look on BBC and it may say it's going to snow heavily for 5 hours but the MET Office say there isn't a snowflake in sight, who do you believe?! and bizarrely I think the BBC still use the MET Office for their forecasts,,, Huh?!
I looked at BBC over the last few days and it's website local hourly forecast, the map on the same page and the TV forecast were all different. Then you have the MET Office with a yellow warning for cloud but no warnings but yet dark clouds with four snowflakes denoting heavy snow so it's confusing at best. It's easy enough if it snows all night and it's fairly obvious in the morning but the difficulties come when the forecast is suggesting heavy snow between say 10am and 4pm. Not worth dragging all in if no one can get home!!!

School will be open on Friday 2nd March 2018, but only for students whose parents need them looked after because of their own work commitments.

For a grammar school to stay open in blizzards could be seen to be irresponsible. It is entirely possible during this unusually bad weather for there to be a window of opportunity to get to the school. To get there though without considering how everyone gets home if the weather turns worse is being negligent.
Out here in Essex some infant/junior schools have been open, because the pupils are overwhelmingly very local, but secondary schools, having a catchment needing public/private transport to get to and fro, have been shut and pupils will not return until Monday.

I'm working from home today, school was open but with the threat of closing early so I took the decision to keep the kids off. Fuck driving down some of the side roads we need to go down to get them there this morning in BLIZZARD conditions and the sheet ice on the paths that haven't been gritted. For the sake of one day off school I'd rather not take any risks.

Having been on a recent HR course, I fully understand organisations being VERY careful about what they do or don't do, as the threat of being sued now for almost anything is ridiculous!
